Where we live we have access to fresh turmeric at our local health food store but we realize not everyone does. The color and flavor of fresh turmeric far surpass that of dried or ground turmeric so we highly encourage purchasing it fresh turmeric to use in recipes if you can.
Fresh turmeric can be stored on the counter in a cool area for about a week or you can toss it in the crisper drawer in your fridge for 2-3 weeks.
If you happen to find fresh turmeric keep in mind you can freeze it to use at a later time- simply toss the entire turmeric root into the freezer as is! To use frozen turmeric simply remove the rhizome (turmeric root) and slice off the amount you’d like to use. You can let the turmeric defrost or peel and chop it while frozen!

WARNING: A note about cooking with fresh turmeric! Turmeric has a beautiful and vibrant orange color that will indeed stain everything that touches it so keep this in mind when you’re peeling, slicing, or dicing fresh turmeric to use in your recipes at home.
